Do you need DOT numbers on a roofing pickup?
A roofing crew runs a 3/4-ton or 1-ton pickup with a dump trailer of tear-off, or a dump truck, and the shingle delivery comes on a boom truck. Tear-off is heavy (a roof's worth of asphalt shingles weighs tons), so a loaded dump trailer behind a pickup is a combination that regularly exceeds the federal marking line on combined rating, and a dump truck is over it on its own. In roofing the compliance set is part of the lettering order more often than not; the checker uses your real ratings.
The federal rule (from the same verified data as our checker): name and USDOT number on both sides of the power unit from 10,001 lbs (49 CFR 390.21T(b)(2)); other triggers in the federal box below.
The federal baseline, the same in every state
- USDOT Number + Legal / Trade Name, both sides of the power unit (49 CFR 390.21T(b)(2); 49 CFR 390.21T(b)(1))
- Readable from 50 feet in daylight, no inch minimum · sharp contrast
- MC Number: recommended, not required (49 CFR 390.21T)
- Triggers: 10,001 lbs or more · placard-level hazmat · 9+ passengers for hire · 16+ passengers

Roofing vehicle lettering FAQ
Does a roofing truck need a USDOT number?
Often, because a pickup pulling a loaded dump trailer, or a dump truck, is rated over the federal line; if you cross state lines the federal markings apply, and many states apply an intrastate rule. The checker above runs your truck and trailer ratings and lists what goes on the doors.
Does my state require the roofing license number on the truck?
Florida's conditional rule, and the California and Nevada licensee rules, are quoted below. Some do. Texas, for one, has no state roofing license, so there is no state number to put on a Texas roofing truck.
Where do the compliance markings go on a pickup?
Both front doors of the pickup (the power unit), in a contrasting color, readable from 50 feet: the USDOT number and the legal name, plus any state number. The advertising lettering goes around them on the doors and bed sides.
What should the trailer say?
Company name, phone number and the roof-type line on the sides; the stay-back decal and the number on the rear gate. Trailers get separated from trucks; each carries the name.
Can you handle a roofing fleet before storm season?
Yes. Matched sets for every truck and trailer, with unit numbers, fleet pricing from 15 units, and multi-color logo sets for 30 or more ship in 3 to 5 business days. Order before the season, not during it.
