What to put on a painting cargo van
- 'Painting' with 'Interior · Exterior · Cabinets · Commercial' Cabinet refinishing and commercial repaints are the margin work; homeowners search those words.
- Phone number big on the side panel and rear doors The van sits in front of the job for a week. The whole street reads the side.
- License number where your state licenses painters and has a vehicle rule California and Nevada licensees carry the name and license number on commercial vehicles; see the verified rules below.
- 'Free estimates' and a review QR Painting is bid work. 'Free estimates' plus a scan is how the neighbor books the walk-through.
- Insured line Ladders, sprayers and other people's furniture. Insured is the word.
- Clean, well-kept lettering A painter's van with peeling letters sells the opposite of what you do. Commercial-grade vinyl stays sharp.

Do you need DOT numbers on a painting cargo van?
Paint is heavy for its size, about 10 lb per gallon for many coatings, so a van loaded for an exterior job with thirty gallons, sprayers, ladders on the rack and scaffold sections carries real weight, but a painting van still usually stays under the federal marking line. A box truck for commercial work or a van towing a lift trailer is the setup to check; the GVWR sticker and the trailer rating decide it.
The federal rule (from the same verified data as our checker): name and USDOT number on both sides of the power unit from 10,001 lbs (49 CFR 390.21T(b)(2)); other triggers in the federal box below.
The federal baseline, the same in every state
- USDOT Number + Legal / Trade Name, both sides of the power unit (49 CFR 390.21T(b)(2); 49 CFR 390.21T(b)(1))
- Readable from 50 feet in daylight, no inch minimum · sharp contrast
- MC Number: recommended, not required (49 CFR 390.21T)
- Triggers: 10,001 lbs or more · placard-level hazmat · 9+ passengers for hire · 16+ passengers

Mistakes painting owners make with vehicle lettering
- Lettering that peels. Craft vinyl peels in a summer; use commercial-grade cast or calendared vinyl rated for vehicles.
- Only 'painting'. Cabinets and commercial are the higher-ticket words and they take one line.
- No estimate line. Painting is bid, and the van should invite the bid.
- Letters in the shadow of the ladder rack. Keep the side lettering in the clear band.
- A license number that doesn't match the license record. Where a state requires it, the name and number must match what the board has.
Painting vehicle lettering FAQ
Do painters need a license number on the van?
California and Nevada license painters and have a vehicle rule for every licensee; both are quoted below. Only in states that license painting as a contractor trade and have a vehicle rule for licensees. Most other states we checked license painting locally or not at all.
Does a painting van need DOT numbers?
Rarely, because a painting van is under the federal weight line in almost every setup; a box truck or a van towing a lift trailer is the exception worth running through the checker above.
Will paint overspray ruin the lettering?
Overspray on the van cleans off the vinyl the same way it cleans off the paint, with the same solvent, within reason. Don't scrub the letter edges with a razor.
What should the rear doors say?
A one-line pitch tied to the job you're on ('Like this color? Call us') and the number, plus a review QR. The side already has the name and services.
Can you match my swatch colors?
We match from our vinyl color range to your brand colors or a paint swatch as closely as the range allows, and show the match on the proof.
More than one vehicle?
Fleet pricing from 15 vehicles, matched layouts across every unit, unit numbers included, one proof for the whole batch.
