What you get

• 2" is our standard starting size for most trucks and vans; federal law (49 CFR §390.21) requires markings legible from 50 feet in daylight — larger trucks may need taller lettering

Sizes

• 2" tall lettering — recommended for most trucks and vans
• 3"–4" tall — box trucks, semis, high cabs
• Width check: your USDOT line runs about 0.8" wide per character for every 1" of height — USDOT 1234567 is about 21" at 2", 31" at 3", 42" at 4". If that's too wide for your panel, we stack USDOT above the digits or shrink to fit at no charge; you choose on the proof.
• Prefix: we cut USDOT 1234567 unless you type it differently (US DOT, USDOT #, DOT are all accepted by enforcement).

How to order

1. Type your USDOT number in the text box, then choose height, width and color
2. Add to cart and check out
3. Within one business day (usually the same day) we email a proof — reply APPROVED
4. We cut, weed, tape and ship 1–2 business days after your approval (RUSH: next business day)

Application (about 5 minutes)

1. Clean and dry the surface — remove any wax or road film
2. Position the decal and tape one edge to hold it in place
3. Peel the paper backing away, leaving the vinyl on the transfer tape
4. Squeegee from the center outward to remove air bubbles
5. Slowly peel the transfer tape back at a sharp angle, leaving the vinyl on the truck

Standard vinyl, reflective, or magnetic?

• Standard vinyl (this listing) — the everyday choice: 5+ year outdoor film, sharpest contrast, lowest cost. Meets the legibility rule on any truck you own.
• Reflective vinyl — same layout, lights up in headlights. A visibility upgrade for night operations, not a marking requirement (about $10 more per set).
• Magnetic — leased, rented or rotating trucks: the marking must be displayed while you operate, and a magnet does that and lifts off in seconds. Steel doors only; from $34.95 a pair.

What the federal rule actually says

49 CFR §390.21: your legal or trade name and your USDOT number on both sides of the power unit, in a color that contrasts with the truck, legible from 50 feet in daylight. There is no federal letter-height number — 2" is the common industry size for pickups and vans; we recommend 3"–4" for box trucks and semis. Some states set their own height or add a suffix letter — type your state after your number and we size and format to it.
