- Width check: your USDOT line runs about 0.8" wide per character for every 1" of height — USDOT 1234567 is about 21" at 2", 31" at 3", 42" at 4". If that's too wide for your panel, we stack USDOT above the digits or shrink to fit at no charge; you choose on the proof.

How to order

Application (about 5 minutes)
- Clean and dry the surface — remove any wax or road film
- Position the decal and tape one edge to hold it in place
- Peel the paper backing away, leaving the vinyl on the transfer tape
- Squeegee from the center outward to remove air bubbles
- Slowly peel the transfer tape back at a sharp angle, leaving the vinyl on the truck

Standard vinyl, reflective, or magnetic?

- Reflective vinyl — same layout, lights up in headlights. A visibility upgrade for night operations, not a marking requirement (about $10 more per set).

What the federal rule actually says
49 CFR §390.21: your legal or trade name and your USDOT number on both sides of the power unit, in a color that contrasts with the truck, legible from 50 feet in daylight. There is no federal letter-height number — 2" is the common industry size for pickups and vans; we recommend 3"–4" for box trucks and semis. Some states set their own height or add a suffix letter — type your state after your number and we size and format to it.

Getting the USDOT line right the first time
This set is the number line only: the letters USDOT followed by your number, one decal for each side of the truck. A truck that is completely blank also needs the company name, so most first orders for a new truck are the Full Compliance Kit instead.
What the federal rule asks for
For interstate commercial motor vehicles, 49 CFR 390.21T asks for your legal name or single trade name and your USDOT number on both sides of the self-propelled vehicle, in a color that contrasts sharply with the background and readable from 50 feet in daylight while the vehicle is stopped. The number is shown with "USDOT" in front of it. The rule names no letter height; 50 feet is the test. Whether your vehicle is covered depends on weight (10,001 lbs or more, rating or actual, whichever is greater), passengers and hazmat under 49 CFR 390.5T, and your state can add its own rules for in-state trucks. "DOT" or "USDOT"?
We cut USDOT in front of your number even if you type DOT, because that is how the marking rule writes it. If your state adds a letter after the number for in-state carriers, type it in and we cut it on the same line; USDOT state suffix letters lists which states do.
Picking a height
Two inches is where most pickups and vans start; the tall cab doors on box trucks and tractors usually look right at three. Measure the flat part of the door below the window and choose the size that fits with room around it. Before you order
- Copy the number from your FMCSA registration rather than from memory. A transposed digit means a second set; the USDOT lookup guide shows where to find it.
- White or yellow reads on dark paint, black on white or silver. The live preview shows your number in your color before you add it to the cart.
