49 CFR 390.21(d) allows the required markings to be displayed on a removable device as long as it meets the same identification requirements. That makes magnets legal for the markings, and it makes them the right answer for leased trucks, seasonal operations, and anyone who does not want vinyl on a vehicle they will hand back.

California carriers, this is legal for you
13 CCR 1256 says it in plain words: the markings may be printed on the vehicle or may consist of a removable device, as long as that device meets the identification and legibility requirements. California does not require permanent lettering, so a magnet carrying your CA number and company name is compliant.
Read this before you order
Magnets only hold on steel. A lot of modern vans and truck doors are aluminum or fiberglass and a magnet will not stay on them at highway speed. If you are not sure, put a fridge magnet on the door before you buy. If it falls off, order the vinyl set instead and we will help you switch.

Colors & sizing
Standard is a white magnet with black lettering (the highest-contrast combo). Want another lettering color — red, blue, silver, your brand color — type it in the box. Size is per magnet and you get two. Long company name? Pick a wider size or we set the name on two lines; the proof shows exact letter heights before we print.
Putting them on
No adhesive, no transfer tape. Wipe the door and the back of the magnet, place it flat on a smooth steel panel (not over body lines, rivets or aluminum/fiberglass — magnets won't hold there), smooth from the middle out. Pull them off and wipe both sides weekly so grit doesn't scratch the paint. Written instructions in every order.
