Where do DOT numbers go on a truck?
The rule is simple: your markings go on both sides of the self-propelled vehicle (the power unit — tractor or straight truck) and must be legible from 50 feet. Most carriers place them on the cab doors or the lower side panel of the cab.
What goes where
A clean, compliant layout usually stacks like this:
- Company name on top (if you display one)
- USDOT 1234567 below the name
- MC number next, if you have operating authority
- GVWR rating if your vehicle or state requires it
Placement tips that pass inspection
What inspectors actually look for:
- Both sides — not just the driver's door
- High contrast — dark on a light truck, light on a dark truck
- A flat, clean spot — avoid rivets, seams, and tight curves where you can
- Unobstructed — not hidden behind ladders, racks, boxes, or wraps
Trailers and combination units
The USDOT number goes on the power unit, not the trailer. If you pull for another carrier, the number shown is generally the carrier responsible for operating the vehicle — check your lease or authority.
