Why it's not optional
Operating under a USDOT number that isn't yours is a violation with real teeth — and several states (Missouri's marking rule, for one) explicitly require markings removed when a vehicle is sold. An inspector running the door number against the registration is the fastest write-up in the book.
The 30-minute method
- Heat — a heat gun or hair dryer on low, 6-8 inches away, until the vinyl is warm to the touch. Warm vinyl peels; cold vinyl chips.
- Peel low and slow — pull back at a sharp angle (not straight out), a few inches at a time.
- Plastic razor blades only — metal blades scar paint. Plastic razors shift stubborn pieces safely.
- Adhesive remover — citrus-based remover or isopropyl for the glue shadow; wash and wax after.
The ghost problem
On sun-faded paint, removed lettering leaves a ghost outline where the vinyl protected the finish. Two honest fixes: polish the panel, or cover the ghost with your new lettering in a slightly larger size — tell us the old layout and we'll size the new set to cover it.
