Do you need DOT numbers on a locksmith cargo van?

A locksmith van carries a key machine, blanks, lock stock, a code machine and tools: a moderate load that leaves a cargo van well under the federal marking line. Of all the trades on this page, locksmiths have the least to think about on the DOT side and the most to think about on trust, which is why the name, address and license lines matter more than the weight.

The federal rule (from the same verified data as our checker): name and USDOT number on both sides of the power unit from 10,001 lbs (49 CFR 390.21T(b)(2)); other triggers in the federal box below.

The federal baseline, the same in every state
  • USDOT Number + Legal / Trade Name, both sides of the power unit (49 CFR 390.21T(b)(2); 49 CFR 390.21T(b)(1))
  • Readable from 50 feet in daylight, no inch minimum · sharp contrast
  • MC Number: recommended, not required (49 CFR 390.21T)
  • Triggers: 10,001 lbs or more · placard-level hazmat · 9+ passengers for hire · 16+ passengers

Locksmith vehicle rules by state, verified

These are the locksmith vehicle-marking rules we have read in the state's own statute or regulation. States not listed: we have not verified a rule for them (our research notes list which ones were checked).

California: Locksmiths

Applies whenThe business holds a California locksmith license and runs a mobile service vehicle.
Displayed in the vehicleThe locksmith license, with the current renewal certificate, conspicuously displayed at all times in each mobile service vehicle the license is issued for (a displayed credential, not lettering).

California does not make locksmiths letter the van, but the license itself (plus the current renewal certificate) has to be on display inside each mobile service vehicle, or the Bureau can fine $250 per violation.

Mistakes locksmith owners make with vehicle lettering

Locksmith vehicle lettering FAQ

Does my state require a locksmith license number on the van?

California's rule (display the license inside the mobile vehicle) is quoted below; North Carolina and Texas regulate locksmith advertising rather than the vehicle itself. It varies.

Does a locksmith van need a USDOT number?

Almost never. A van with a key machine and stock is far under the federal weight line, and the rule doesn't care about the trade. The checker above will confirm it for your van.

Should the rear doors be reflective?

It's a reasonable choice for a van that parks on dark streets and lots at night: a reflective number on the rear is readable in headlights. Not required, just practical.

What's the most important line on a locksmith van?

The phone number, matching your website and your Google listing, with your real business name and a local address under it. The lockout customer is checking that the van matches the listing.

Can you letter a fleet of locksmith vans?

Yes, matched across the fleet with unit numbers; fleet pricing from 15 vans.

More than one vehicle?

Fleet pricing from 15 vehicles, matched layouts across every unit, unit numbers included, one proof for the whole batch.
