The rule doesn't say vinyl
Federal marking rules require the name and number to be displayed to spec — both sides, sharp contrast, readable from 50 feet. A removable device that meets the spec while you operate is compliant. Magnets are explicitly workable.
When magnets are the right call
- Leased or borrowed trucks — take your authority with you between vehicles.
- Part-time operations — personal truck on weekdays, working truck on weekends.
- Waiting on paint or a wrap — stay legal today, letter properly later.
When vinyl wins
Full-time trucks. Vinyl can't blow off on the highway, can't be stolen at a truck stop, doesn't trap grit that scratches paint, and costs less than a magnet set. Commercial-grade cast vinyl outlives most magnets 5-to-1 outdoors.
The mistake that voids both
Size and contrast. A 12x6 magnet crammed with name, USDOT, MC, phone, and a logo fails the 50-foot test. Whatever the material, the number needs to be the headline — we cut both magnetic USDOT signs and vinyl sets to the same passing spec.
