Track this one. A rule change was filed on 14 May 2026 with a hearing on 21 July 2026 that would downgrade the display mandate to recommended and appears to drop the front-of-vehicle unit number. It is still worth displaying today. Ask us where it landed before you reorder.

A note on the 2 inch rule
Most sellers tell you 2 inch letters are federally required. They are not. 49 CFR 390.21(c) only requires markings on both sides that contrast sharply with the background and are legible from 50 feet in daylight. The 2 inch figure comes from individual state rules and industry habit. We size to whichever standard applies to you and tell you which one it is.
