Your KYU weight-distance licence number for the truck doors, cut to the 49 CFR 390.21 standard Kentucky applies to it.
Who this is for
Carriers holding a Kentucky KYU licence — the weight-distance tax credential for vehicles at 60,000 lbs and over (KRS 138.660(3)). If that is you, 601 KAR 1:200 section 4 says the KYU number goes on each taxed vehicle in the same manner as 49 CFR 390.21: both sides, sharp contrast, readable from 50 feet in daylight. The same section also wants a unique unit number on the front, readable from 100 feet, between the bottom of the windshield and the bottom of the bumper — tell us in the order box if you want that cut too.
The spec we cut to
Marking: KYU 123456 Letter size: no fixed height in the rule; legible from 50 feet in daylight, 2 inch is our minimum Authority: 601 KAR 1:200 section 4 (Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Division of Motor Carriers)
That citation is on this listing because we actually read it. Most sellers in this category quote a generic 2 inch federal rule at you regardless of what state you are in.
Not the same as your intrastate carrier number
Kentucky's intrastate motor carrier identification number is different: 601 KAR 1:005 section 8 has trucks that never leave Kentucky display it as their USDOT number followed by the letters KY — USDOT 1234567 KY — next to the carrier name. If you need that marking, order USDOT number decals and put KY after the number in the order box; the Kentucky USDOT page has the full rule.
Read this first
Track this one. A rule change filed on 14 May 2026 (hearing held 21 July 2026) would downgrade the display mandate to recommended and appears to drop the front-of-vehicle unit number; as of our last check it had not taken effect. Ask us before you reorder and we will confirm the current status. It is still worth displaying today. Ask us where it landed before you reorder.
What you get
Two decals, one for each side of the power unit, sized to read from 50 feet (the state sets no fixed height; 2 inch is our minimum). Any color. Send your number exactly as the state issued it and we will lay it out.
A note on the 2 inch rule
Most sellers tell you 2 inch letters are federally required. They are not. 49 CFR 390.21(c) only requires markings on both sides that contrast sharply with the background and are legible from 50 feet in daylight. The 2 inch figure comes from individual state rules and industry habit. We size to whichever standard applies to you and tell you which one it is.
How it works
- Add to cart and type your details in the text box above the Add-to-cart button.
- We email you a proof, laid out to scale on a mock-up of your surface (send a photo of your door, window or truck and we lay it on that), usually same day.
- You approve it. Then we cut. Nothing gets cut before you say yes.
Installs in minutes
Every decal ships pre-masked on transfer tape as one piece. Clean the surface, tape it in place, peel, squeegee, pull the tape off. Written instructions in every order.
Free digital proof (usually same business day). Free U.S. shipping. Ships 1–2 business days after proof approval from Las Vegas, NV. Orders of 30+ sets with multi-color logos ship in 3–5 business days.

Kentucky truck marking rules, verified against state law
The number on this listing is one marking; these are the state rules we have verified for trucks based in Kentucky, so you can see what else the door needs.
✓ Checked against Kentucky statutes and regulations · last verified 2026-07-28
- Kentucky is unusual: the intrastate carrier number is displayed as your USDOT number with the letters KY after it — for example USDOT 1234567 KY — alongside your carrier name, cut to the same legibility standard as the federal marking rule. KYU (the weight-distance tax licence, generally 60,000 lbs and over) is a separate credential with its own display rule: KYU licensees also show the KYU number on each taxed vehicle in the 49 CFR 390.21 manner (601 KAR 1:200 Section 4).
How it reads on the door: USDOT 1234567 KY — your real number goes in, we show it on the proof before anything is cut.
The Kentucky display spec we cut to
- Letter height: state law sets no fixed height; the standard is legible from 50 feet in daylight, so we never cut this number under 2 inches.
- Color: sharp contrast with the panel behind it, the same standard as a USDOT number.
- Placement: both sides of the power unit (cab doors are the usual spot).

Who enforces it in Kentucky: Kentucky Transportation Cabinet — Division of Motor Carriers · (502) 564-1257. Rules change; the agency is the authority on what is current.
