What Maryland requires
Maryland requires every truck over 10,000 pounds, truck tractor and bus operated on public roads, unless specifically exempt, to display either a US DOT number or a Maryland-issued motor carrier identification number (Transportation Article § 22-404.3). Carriers that never leave Maryland get the Maryland number and display it in the federal style with an MD suffix — the state's own example reads Rotz Trucking USDOT 12345 MD.
Exempt from the display: farm trucks and farm truck tractors, farm area motor vehicles, emergency vehicles, vehicles within 15 days of purchase, vehicles transporting money or commercial paper, government-owned vehicles, and school buses under government contract.
