What Indiana requires
Indiana requires a USDOT number and vehicle marking for intrastate operation at a GVWR or combined weight of 10,001 lbs or more, for vehicles carrying more than nine passengers including the driver, and for placardable hazmat. The marking is the carrier's name or trade name plus the USDOT number, and an intrastate vehicle must have an IN suffix — USDOT 1234567 IN — on both sides, in a sharply contrasting color, legible from 50 feet in daylight. The state's own guidebook suggests approximately 2-inch block-style letters and numbers.
Farm-plated vehicles that do not leave Indiana do not need a USDOT number.
