Where empty weight and VIN lettering goes, and why
These decals are for trailer owners, equipment and rental yards, dump and roll-off operators, and fleets that want weight and identity facts readable from the ground.
What the rules we have verified say
None of the federal or state marking rules we have verified require empty weight or the VIN lettered on the outside of a vehicle. The federal rule covers the carrier's name and USDOT number (49 CFR 390.21T). The one weight line we have verified is in New Jersey: trucks rated 26,001 lbs and up (single or combined) that are registered or principally garaged there display the GVWR in letters at least 3 inches tall (N.J.S.A. 39:4-46(b)). If someone tells you empty weight is required for your operation, ask which rule, and put the exact wording in your order.
Where it goes
- Trailers: on the front of the trailer or the tongue, near the VIN plate, so whoever checks the hitch can read it standing up.
- Trucks: under the GVWR line on the door, or on a flat face of a dump or service body.
- Equipment: on a flat face near the serial plate.
Sizes that fit
Block letters run roughly 0.8 inch wide per character for every inch of height. A 17-character VIN is about 14 inches wide at 1 inch tall and about 27 inches at 2 inches, which fits our 30-inch width. At 3 inches it runs about 41 inches, so a 3-inch VIN goes on two lines. A short weight line such as EMPTY WT 9,840 is about 22 inches wide at 2 inches.
Why fleets add them anyway
- Empty weight on the unit lets a driver or loader work out remaining payload against the GVWR without looking anything up.
- A readable VIN speeds up yard checks, rental returns and matching trailers to paperwork.
- A unit with its VIN on the outside is easier to identify if it goes missing.
