DOT number requirements at a glance
Federal FMCSA rules apply to commercial carriers in every state, including New Jersey. Your USDOT number must be:
- Displayed on both sides of the power unit
- In a color that contrasts sharply with the vehicle
- Readable from 50 feet in daylight (letters at least 2″ tall)
- Shown as “USDOT 1234567” — the letters “USDOT” before your number
