DOT number requirements at a glance
Federal FMCSA rules apply to commercial carriers in every state, including New Jersey. Your USDOT number must be:
- Displayed on both sides of the power unit
- In a color that contrasts sharply with the vehicle
- Readable from 50 feet in daylight — no federal letter height is set; we cut 2″ as the safe floor
- Shown as “USDOT 1234567” — the letters “USDOT” before your number

- New Jersey is stricter than the federal rule and it applies to EVERY commercial vehicle, even light ones: owner name plus the municipality of your principal place of business, in letters at least 3 inches tall, in plain view. Pickup with a business name on it? This is the rule that covers it.
- NJ trucks at 26,001 lbs and up also display the GVWR itself in 3-inch letters — a decal most out-of-state shops have never heard of. Pairs with the name + municipality marking and the federal USDOT marking.
