Why dump trucks are special
Almost every working dump truck is over 26,001 lbs — above every state's intrastate threshold, not just the federal one. There's no gray area: name + USDOT number on both sides, period. Local enforcement (scale houses, construction-zone checks) sees more dump trucks than any other vocation.
The extra layers by state
- GVW display — some states want the weight rating on the door (New Jersey: 26,001+ lbs, letters at least 3 inches). Many operators run GVW decals everywhere for scale-house speed.
- State carrier numbers — California CA numbers, and a dozen other states issue their own — see your state's page.
- Contractor license — several states require the contractor's license number on construction vehicles; check your licensing board.
