The 26,000-lb myth
Drivers hear "under 26,001 lbs = no CDL" and assume no DOT rules apply. Those are different thresholds. The CDL line is 26,001 lbs; the federal commercial motor vehicle line — where USDOT registration and door marking start — is 10,001 lbs. A typical 16-ft box truck (12,500 GVWR) or 26-ft box truck (25,999 GVWR) is squarely a CMV, no CDL required.
Crossing state lines? It's simple.
Interstate commerce at 10,001+ lbs GVWR means: USDOT number required, displayed on both sides with your company name, contrasting color, readable from 50 feet. That famous 25,999-GVWR rental-style box truck used for business across state lines needs the number on its doors.
Staying in one state? Depends on the state.

What actually goes on the doors
Legal or DBA name + "USDOT" + your number. Most box-truck operators add phone and website while they're at it — the box is a rolling billboard. Box truck lettering and USDOT decals ship cut-to-stick.
