Work Van Branding: The Rolling Billboard

Your van sits in traffic 20 hours a week in front of exactly the people who hire you. Most vans waste it.

The stoplight test

A driver behind your van at a light has about 8 seconds. They need to answer three questions: what do you do, what are you called, how do I call you. If the van says more than that — six services, two slogans, a mural — it usually says nothing. Big trade name, one-line service ("DRAIN & SEWER EXPERTS"), huge phone number.

What's legally required

Trades in many states must show a contractor license number on work vehicles. And if your van tops 10,001 lbs GVWR or crosses state lines for business, DOT marking rules can apply — two minutes on the free compliance check settles it.

Layout that works on a van

Name high on the body sides where sightlines are clean; phone number big on the back doors (that's what traffic stares at); repeat the essentials on both sides. QR codes earn their spot on the rear at eye level — a review or booking QR converts parked-van curiosity into calls.

Cut vinyl vs a wrap

A full wrap runs $2,500-5,000. Cut-vinyl lettering delivers the stoplight test for a tenth of that, goes on in an afternoon, and updates cheaply when your number or name changes. Start with lettering; wrap later if the brand earns it. See door & van lettering.

General information, not legal advice. Rules change — confirm current federal and state requirements with the FMCSA and your state agency before you operate. Our state summaries were verified against primary sources July 2026.
