DOT number requirements at a glance
Federal FMCSA rules apply to commercial carriers in every state, including Virginia. Your USDOT number must be:
- Displayed on both sides of the power unit
- In a color that contrasts sharply with the vehicle
- Readable from 50 feet in daylight — no federal letter height is set; we cut 2″ as the safe floor
- Shown as “USDOT 1234567” — the letters “USDOT” before your number
These are the federal baseline standards. Virginia intrastate carriers may have additional state requirements — tell us your state at checkout and we'll match them, or verify current rules with your state DOT/DMV.

- Virginia requires USDOT registration at 10,001 lbs and up (or 9+ passengers for compensation, 16+ otherwise, or placarded hazmat), and 19VAC30-20-80 applies the federal safety rules — including the name + USDOT marking rule — to intrastate operations. Note: Virginia's intrastate safety-reg CMV definition itself starts above 26,000 lbs (19VAC30-20-10), so marking enforcement for 10,001-26,000 lb intrastate-only trucks is a registration-driven practice rather than an explicit intrastate marking mandate.

Virginia DOT decal FAQ
Do I need a USDOT number in Virginia?
If you operate a commercial vehicle over 10,001 lbs, haul hazardous materials, or carry passengers for hire, federal law requires a USDOT number displayed on both sides of the vehicle — and many Virginia intrastate carriers need one too. We cut yours exactly as it should read.
What size do USDOT decals have to be?
FMCSA’s actual standard is legibility — readable from 50 feet in daylight, in a color that contrasts sharply with your truck, with “USDOT” shown before the number. Two-inch letters are the industry floor that reliably clears that bar, and some states set their own minimum on top of the federal rule. We cut 2″ by default and also cut 3″ and 4″ for larger trucks.
How fast can you ship decals to Virginia?
We make every order in 1–2 business days and ship nationwide, so most Virginia carriers have their decals in hand within a few days. Everything arrives weeded, taped, and ready to apply.
Can you match Virginia's requirements?
