Federal FMCSA rules apply to commercial carriers in every state, including Texas. Your USDOT number must be:
- Displayed on both sides of the power unit
- In a color that contrasts sharply with the vehicle

- Shown as “USDOT 1234567” — the letters “USDOT” before your number

- Texas trucks that never leave the state need USDOT number + legal name on both sides at more than 26,000 lbs (gross, registered, or rated weight — whichever crosses first), or with 16+ passenger seating, or hauling placard-level hazmat at any weight. Texas quirk: farm vehicles are exempt only under 48,000 lbs — a heavy farm truck is still a CMV. Operating unmarked is a Class C misdemeanor (Transp. Code 642.002).

Do I need a USDOT number in Texas?
If you operate a commercial vehicle over 10,001 lbs, haul hazardous materials, or carry passengers for hire, federal law requires a USDOT number displayed on both sides of the vehicle — and many Texas intrastate carriers need one too. We cut yours exactly as it should read.
What size do USDOT decals have to be?
FMCSA’s actual standard is legibility — readable from 50 feet in daylight, in a color that contrasts sharply with your truck, with “USDOT” shown before the number.
