DOT number requirements at a glance
Federal FMCSA rules apply to commercial carriers in every state, including Massachusetts. Your USDOT number must be:
- Displayed on both sides of the power unit
- In a color that contrasts sharply with the vehicle
- Readable from 50 feet in daylight — no federal letter height is set; we cut 2″ as the safe floor
- Shown as “USDOT 1234567” — the letters “USDOT” before your number
These are the federal baseline standards. Massachusetts intrastate carriers may have additional state requirements — tell us your state at checkout and we'll match them, or verify current rules with your state DOT/DMV.

- Since September 2018, Massachusetts intrastate trucks from 10,001 lbs mark the USDOT number federal-style: with the carrier name, both sides, sharp contrast, readable from 50 feet.
- Massachusetts 'motor truck' name marking applies to trucks with a load-carrying capacity between 2,000 and 10,000 lbs (heavier trucks fall under the USDOT marking rule instead): owner's name on both sides, plainly visible, readable from 50 feet in daylight. Trucks leased over 30 days may show the owner's or lessee's name (or both). Farm vehicles within 150 air-miles are exempt.

Massachusetts DOT decal FAQ
Do I need a USDOT number in Massachusetts?
If you operate a commercial vehicle over 10,001 lbs, haul hazardous materials, or carry passengers for hire, federal law requires a USDOT number displayed on both sides of the vehicle — and many Massachusetts intrastate carriers need one too. We cut yours exactly as it should read.
What size do USDOT decals have to be?
FMCSA’s actual standard is legibility — readable from 50 feet in daylight, in a color that contrasts sharply with your truck, with “USDOT” shown before the number. Two-inch letters are the industry floor that reliably clears that bar, and some states set their own minimum on top of the federal rule. We cut 2″ by default and also cut 3″ and 4″ for larger trucks.
How fast can you ship decals to Massachusetts?
We make every order in 1–2 business days and ship nationwide, so most Massachusetts carriers have their decals in hand within a few days. Everything arrives weeded, taped, and ready to apply.
Can you match Massachusetts's requirements?
Yes. Tell us your state and vehicle at checkout and we cut to your Massachusetts intrastate spec. Not sure what you need? Message us — 20 years in vehicle graphics means we'll get it right.
