DOT number requirements at a glance
Federal FMCSA rules apply to commercial carriers in every state, including Colorado. Your USDOT number must be:
- Displayed on both sides of the power unit
- In a color that contrasts sharply with the vehicle

Do I need a USDOT number in Colorado?
If you operate a commercial vehicle over 10,001 lbs, haul hazardous materials, or carry passengers for hire, federal law requires a USDOT number displayed on both sides of the vehicle — and many Colorado intrastate carriers need one too. We cut yours exactly as it should read.
