What you are actually paying for
Cut-vinyl lettering is priced by the job, not the truck: how much vinyl gets cut, how many pieces and colors have to be weeded and lined up, and whether someone installs it. We charge no design fee, and every order gets a free digital proof before anything is cut. The prices below are our own, with free U.S. shipping included.
The five things that move the price
- Number of lines. Name, USDOT, MC, GVWR, phone and unit number are each a separate piece. A one-line USDOT set is the simplest job we cut. A four-line door stack costs more in total, but less per line when it is cut as one matched set.
- Letter height. Taller letters use more vinyl and need a wider panel. Our USDOT number decals are $16 a set at 2 inches, $22 at 3 inches and $28 at 4 inches.
- Colors and layers. One color is one cut. A two-color logo is two cuts that have to line up on top of each other. On our truck door lettering, lettering and one-color logos are included; a 2-color logo adds $10 and a 3-color logo adds $20.
- Logos. Solid shapes cut cleanly. Hairlines, gradients and photo-style art have to be simplified first, and the proof shows the change.
- Quantity. 15 or more trucks in one order takes 10% off the whole order automatically, with one proof sheet so every unit matches. If a sitewide sale is running, the two don't stack; you get the bigger percent. See fleet & volume pricing.

Letter height: buy what the door needs
The federal marking rule names no inch height. Your name and USDOT number must contrast sharply with the background and be legible from 50 feet in daylight, on both sides of the power unit (49 CFR 390.21T). Our house minimum is 2-inch letters for numbers and 3-inch for names; that is shop practice, not a number from the regulation. A few states do set a hard minimum, such as North Carolina's 3-inch letters for intrastate trucks over 26,000 lbs (N.C.G.S. § 20-101(b)). The USDOT size guide covers the rest.
Taller only pays if the panel has room. Block letters run roughly 0.8 inch wide per character for every inch of height, so a 16-character name at 3 inches needs about 38 inches. If it won't fit, we stack it on two lines at no charge.
DIY or installed
Every set ships weeded and pre-masked on transfer tape, so the layout goes on as one piece with a squeegee and a strip of masking tape. Our install guide walks through it. Paying for installation makes sense for a whole fleet, large box-side lettering, multi-layer logos, or weather too cold to work outside. Our sister company, Wrap It! Where cheap goes wrong
- The name doesn't match your filing. Under the federal rule, the door shows your legal name or single trade name as it appears on your MCS-150 (49 CFR 390.21T). Letter a nickname and you letter the truck twice.
- Numbers too small or too faint. Gray on silver, or a thin script face, looks fine up close and fades out at 50 feet.
- Printed vs. cut. We cut every letter from solid-color outdoor vinyl rated 5+ years. There is no printed ink layer to fade.
FAQ
Is there a design or setup fee?
No. You type the wording, we lay it out and email a free proof drawn to scale. Nothing is cut until you approve it.
Is the kit cheaper than buying the sets one by one?
Yes. At starting prices, name lettering ($18.95) plus USDOT, MC and GVW sets ($16.00 each) comes to $66.95. The Standard kit is $54.95, all in one font and color.
Do I have to pay for an MC number decal?
Not for the federal marking rule. 49 CFR 390.21T requires your name and USDOT number; MC display is not part of it. Many for-hire carriers add it by custom. See USDOT vs. MC number.
