If you run for-hire interstate at 10,001 lbs or more combined (truck plus loaded trailer — which is nearly every hotshot setup), the federal marking rule applies to you the same as it does to a semi: your legal name and USDOT number on both sides, in letters that contrast sharply with the background and are legible from 50 feet in daylight (49 CFR §390.21). "It's just a pickup" has never once worked at a scale house.
