What to Put on Your Storefront Door

The short answer

Most small shops need four things on the door: your name or logo, your hours, one way to reach you (phone or website), and PUSH / PULL if it's a glass door. Everything else is optional, and the most common mistake is putting too much on it. A door with twelve stickers reads like none of them matter.

1. Name or logo, at eye level

Put this at eye level, roughly 50 to 60 inches from the ground to the center of the decal. That's where people look when they walk up. It should match your window and sign lettering: same font, same color. A door that looks like the rest of the storefront makes the whole place look put together.

Keep it modest on the door. You usually want 8 to 14 inches wide on a standard glass door. The big version of your name belongs on the window or the sign band above. The door version is there to confirm people are in the right place.

2. Hours, just below the name

Hours are the most-read thing on any storefront. Put them directly under your name so people can read them without bending down or stepping back. A few rules that save headaches:

• One line per day, or group them. "Mon–Fri 9–6 / Sat 10–4 / Sun Closed" is easier to read than seven separate lines.
• Always list closed days. A missing Sunday makes people wonder whether you forgot it.
• Use a size you can read from the sidewalk. Letters about 1 to 1.5 inches tall are readable from 10 to 15 feet.
• Only print what's stable. If your hours change by season, print the base hours and handle exceptions with a small paper sign that you take down when it's over.

3. One contact line, not three

Pick the one thing a customer is most likely to use when you're closed. For a service business that's usually a phone number. For a shop that takes online orders it's the website. Put it under the hours in a smaller size. If you really want both, stack them in one block instead of spreading them around the door.

Social handles and review QR codes are useful, but they work better on a side window or at the counter than on the door. People don't stop in a doorway to scan a code. If reviews matter to you, a review QR decal placed at the register gets more scans.

4. PUSH / PULL near the handle

On glass doors, a small PUSH or PULL decal at hand height next to the handle saves a lot of fumbling at the entrance. Match the color to the rest of your lettering so it looks planned instead of like hardware-store stickers. See our push/pull door decals.

5. The small lines, grouped low

Some lines are worth having but shouldn't compete with your name: accepted cards, "No smoking," "Service animals welcome," a camera notice, a suite number. Group them in one tidy block low on the door or on the side panel, all in the same size and color. One matched set looks deliberate. Six mismatched stickers look like clutter. Color and contrast: white works almost everywhere

Most storefront glass looks dark from outside during the day, so white vinyl is the safe default. It stays readable in daylight and in the evening with the lights on inside. Dark colors can disappear against tinted glass. If you want the lettering to face out but be applied inside, where it's safe from weather and scrapers, reverse-cut window lettering goes on the inside of the glass and reads correctly from the street.

What to leave off

• Promotions and sale prices. They go out of date. Use a paper sign or a window you can change.
• Full lists of services. That belongs on the window or your website, not the door.
• Old hours with tape over them. Customers notice. Replacing an hours decal is cheap.
• Anything below knee height. Nobody reads it.
