Is reflective required
No. 49 CFR 390.21(c) requires markings that contrast sharply with the background and are legible from 50 feet during daylight hours. Reflective is an upgrade, not a mandate. Carriers buy it because their trucks sit in dark yards, because they run nights, and because an officer walking a truck at 4am with a flashlight reads a reflective number without asking you to come outside.

A note on the 2 inch rule
Most sellers tell you 2 inch letters are federally required. They are not. 49 CFR 390.21(c) only requires markings on both sides that contrast sharply with the background and are legible from 50 feet in daylight. The 2 inch figure comes from individual state rules and industry habit. We size to whichever standard applies to you and tell you which one it is.
